A lucky teenager won $200,000 on a lottery scratchcard on his third ever try.

Cody Plemmons, 18, from North Carolina, US, purchased a $4 (£3) scratch card at a petrol station in Marshall while on his way to Tennessee.

He was purchasing some snacks and a drink for the road trip when he fancied a scratchcard and thought "why not."

Cody said: “We mainly stopped at the gas station for a drink and a snack. I honestly don't even know why I got one, I just thought ‘Why not’.”

His stop-off for a quick bite to eat paid off handsomely as he left the store with his sacks - and a huge cash prize in his pocket.

This was just the third lottery ticket purchase Cody had ever made and it turned out to be the best one yet.

He added: “I couldn't believe it when I won, this is only the third lottery ticket I've ever bought.”

A delighted Cody received his prize at the lottery company’s headquarters on 3 January where he picked up his jackpot.

After state and federal tax withholdings, he reportedly took home $142,501 (£118,448).

Most teenagers would think about spending the money on a holiday or a new car but the lucky teen is thinking far more sensibly.

He revealed his cash prize will go into his savings account as he plans for his future.

Launched in May 2022, the Cash Payout scratchcard has five $200,000 (£166,282) prizes and one still remains unclaimed.

Two months ago, a North Carolina woman gave birth to a baby girl before scooping over $100,000 (£80,000) on the lottery.

Brenda Gomez Hernandez, 28, had the day of her life on November 9 when she went into labour on the day of the Powerball draw and then won a staggering $100,000 (£81,412) cash prize.
