The former husband of a woman found dead in a river has been arrested after biting off his current wife's finger.

Benjamin Ledyard, 55, from Delaware, US, is accused of chasing his wife Stephanie Ledyard with a pool cue and smashing her head into the floor of their home on Sunday.

The pair, who had been drinking, allegedly got into an argument over loud music after Ledyard left Stephanie with a laceration to her head.

She managed to escape the home and called 911 where the suspect was arrested on a separate assault charge after allegedly biting off his wife’s fingertip during a fight.

He is being held on $77,000 (£64,000) bond at the Howard Young Correctional Institution.

He is due to appear in court on January 25.

His previous wife, Susan Morrissey Ledyard's body was found on July 23, 2019, in the Brandywine River in Wilmington, Delaware.

The investigation "still active and ongoing," according to police.

Ledyard has not been named as a suspect in the murder as Delaware State Police stated the assault case is "separate" from his current case and "has no bearing on our investigation at this time".

Her death was ruled as a homicide after after her body was said to have visible injuries.

Police determined she died from blunt force trauma and drowning.

Her black 2016 Honda Civic was found next to the Rising Sun Lane Bridge over the Brandywine River - three miles from where her body was found - later that morning.

Police don't believe she entered the river where the car was parked.

Investigators used CCTV footage in the area and Susan Ledyard’s mobile phone records to see where she was prior to her death.

Authorities determined she was alive until 7am on July 23 but are not sure where she was between 3am to 7am .

In addition, it was never revealed what caused her to leave the family home.

Ledyard said in an emotional press conference back in 2019: “Susan was the love of my life. My best friend."

Susan Ledyard’s sister said they haven't spoken to him in three years but are aware of his arrest.

Their family continue to offer $50,000 (£41,000) reward for any information that could lead to an arrest for Susan's death.
