Gary Lineker has shown there is no love lost between himself and Suella Braverman, who was sacked as Home Secretary on Monday morning.

Braverman was fired by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after a weekend of disorder in London. Far-right protesters stormed the Cenotaph, with Braverman being criticised for her comments both before and in response to the clashes with police.

Lineker previously had a run-in with the now-former senior minister in March when he slammed the government's policy on asylum seekers. And the Match of the Day host has now fired a parting shot at the Tory MP after her sacking on Monday.

Lineker quote-tweeted a statement that Braverman issued on Sunday, in which she wrote: "Our brave police officers deserve the thanks of every decent citizen for their professionalism in the face of violence and aggression from protesters and counter-protesters in London yesterday. That multiple officers were injured doing their duty is an outrage.

"The sick, inflammatory and, in some cases, clearly criminal chants, placards and paraphernalia openly on display at the march mark a new low. Antisemitism and other forms of racism together with the valorising of terrorism on such a scale is deeply troubling.

"This can’t go on. Week by week, the streets of London are being polluted by hate, violence, and antisemitism. Members of the public are being mobbed and intimidated. Jewish people in particular feel threatened. Further action is necessary."

Lineker's response to that statement came after her sacking and read: "No, it can’t go on." He also used the waving emoji as he fired a final parting shot towards Braverman.

In response to her sacking, Braveman dropped an ominous warning for Sunak. She said: “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary. I will have more to say in due course.”

James Cleverly has replaced Braverman at the Home Office, with former Prime Minister David Cameron in turn taking his job as Foreign Secretary. The reshuffle has prompted fresh demands from Labour for the government to call a general election.

"Suella Braveman should never have been appointed as Home Secretary in the first place. The last time she was sacked as Home Secretary it was for a national security breach, that was just five days before Rishi Sunak appointed her out of weakness," Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting said.

" Suella Braverman is the beating heart of the Conservative Party. Rishi Sunak doesn't have the support of the Conservative Party. He was weak in appointing her and weak in the delay in sacking her.

"What we need now isn't just a change of faces around the cabinet table, the never-ending merry-go-round of this Conservative clown show. It's a general election, so the country can decide if it wants to continue with more of the same under the Conservatives or a fresh start under Labour."
