Strictly axes seventh star in 'disappointing' result that leaves judges divided

Strictly Come Dancing has axed another couple from the BBC series just a week before the much-anticipated live show in Blackpool.

Newsreader Krishnan Guru-Murthy was the latest victim of the dreaded dance-off, sent home alongside his pro dance partner Lauren Oakley. But not all of the judges wanted the star to be the one axed this weekend, as he faced Angela Rippon and her pro dance partner Kai Widdrington in the bottom two.

Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Head Judge Shirley Ballas once again had to send one couple home, while sending the other through for another week following the public vote. Krishnan and Angela were forced to dance again in a bid to stay in the competition.

But after both performances, the judges voted in a majority to save Angela and Kai, sending home Krishnan and Lauren. The judges were split though, as Anton, Craig and Motsi voted out Krishnan, while Shirley confessed to hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman that she would have saved the couple.

On Saturday night, Krishnan and his partner Lauren performed their Samba to Bamboléo by Gipsy Kings, while Angela and her dance partner Kai performed their Paso Doble to Hung Up by Madonna in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition. Krishnan was actually at the bottom of the scoreboard based on the judges' votes, while Angela was third from bottom.

So perhaps it was no surprise for them that the pair were in the dance-off, with the viewers not saving them with their own votes. That said, viewers were surprised to see Krishnan go over Angela given she had already been in the dance-off previously.

Some viewers took to Twitter to share their surprise at the judges' decision, not in agreement with them saving Angela again. One fan commented: "That makes a total mockery of their role & of the whole programme."

Another viewer said: "Wrong save! They only saved her so that she gets to dance at Blackpool. Didn’t deserve to stay this week. A third viewer said: "Not surprising but disappointing. He's a genuine person."

Angela was in the bottom two last weekend too, with her admitting it was "tough" beating her pal Adam Thomas in the dance-off, sending him home a week ago. While she said she was looking for the positives in getting to dance again, she revealed she was gutted to see Adam go.

Asked about Adam leaving, she said: "I think the situation we're in at the moment is the pool is getting so small now, there's only eight of us now. If there are only going to be three people in the final then every week it gets tougher and someone is going to be the one who is going to be eliminated.

"What was tough about it is Adam is such a lovely guy. We all absolutely adore him, we've all become great friends. When you are the other person in the dance-off, you know you are going to battle it out with someone who's become a mate. It's tough, it is tough."

The latest eliminated pair Krishnan and Lauren will be joining It Takes Two host Fleur East for their first televised interview live on the show on Monday. If it follows the usual format, Angela and Kai will be on the show on Tuesday to discuss them being saved once more.
