Teaching your children valuable life lessons is no easy task, and often parents will have very different ideas when it comes to the tricky topic of discipline. One mother has left fellow parents divided after sharing how she instilled an important lesson in gratitude after her "ungrateful" daughter chucked her brand-new pencil case in the bin.

Hardworking mum Haley, who has been praised by some for her "tough love" approach, went to three separate shops in order to get her daughter Presleigh a pencil case as a sweet surprise.

She had expected the little girl to be "ecstatic" with her present and was therefore astonished when she instead "stared at it and threw it in the trash and slammed the bedroom door".

Taking to Facebook in 2019, where she shared a photo of a tearful Presleigh, Haley revealed: "She yelled, 'That's stupid, everyone in my class has that...I don't want it anymore!'" Unimpressed with her daughter's attitude, Haley recalled how there was "probably smoke coming out of her ears" by this point, but she tried really hard "not to completely lose it".

Believing a gentle wake-up call was in order, Haley continued: "BUT I thought I had always taught her to be grateful and know how lucky she was but apparently sis needed a small wake-up call!! SO before completely going Madea mad on my child I check myself and say, 'Okay that's fine, let me go get the one you're going to use'."

Haley then came back with Presleigh's new 'pencil case' - a simple ziploc bag. According to Haley: "She lost her mind! Suddenly the LOL Box she just trashed was good enough and the ziploc bag was horrible... but it's too late for all that. I told her to get the LOL out of the trash and we would be finding a child to give it to tomorrow - one whose mummy and daddy don't have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mummy or daddy."

Explaining the reasoning behind her teachable moment, Haley added: "I explained to her she's not entitled to anything special and she is taking for granted how lucky she is... So for now she will be using a ziploc bag and will personally be delivering the nice box to a child who could benefit from it. Maybe I over-react sometimes but I would've done anything to have all the things she does as a child. I truly believe changing your perception and just being grateful can turn around any situation in life."

A number of mums praised Haley for passing down wisdom to Presleigh that will no doubt benefit her in the years to come. One impressed mother applauded: "Pat yourself on the back, mama. She'll turn out better in the future, mark my words." Another approved: "Everyone should parent like you!"

Others weren't too sure about her sharing a snap of the tearful child, however, with a third person commenting: "I would venture to say it's not over her making her use a ziploc. But more over her blasting her child on Facebook, posting a picture of her upset and crying, embarrassing her. That situation should have been handled in private."
