Chilly sub-zero nights are coming to the UK, according to new weather forecasts.

Frosty conditions are forecast to grip the UK in the days ahead, with a distinct wintry feel emerging in many parts of the country.

The mercury is expected to drop to -1C in northern England and Scotland overnight on Saturday, according to BBC Weather, hovering around 1C-3C in many parts of the south.

A temperature map from independent forecaster WXCharts showed these parts of the country in dark blue, meaning it could go below freezing in many parts. Remembrance Sunday is also forecast to begin with thick fog in some areas, with rain developing later in the day.

BBC Weather's Ben Rich said in his weather bulletin: "The day is likely to start with some quite widespread mist and fog, and some of that could be quite slow to clear. It could be quite a murky day in many places. Rain likely to be spreading from the south and the west."

A brief spell of milder weather is then expected to follow on Monday following the arrival of a new low pressure frontal system, before temperatures return to lows later in the week. Senior meteorologist for British Weather Services, Jim Dale, said fog and cooler conditions had been likely in parts of the country for some time, and told the Express: "It’s a long time coming - mainly but not exclusively for inland areas of northern UK but not really penetrating. Fog will temper the freeze in many areas."

James Madden, from Exacta Weather, meanwhile said in a recent long-range weather forecast that harsh wintry conditions could start to emerge at the end of the month. He said: "It is now increasingly likely that we will see at least 1-2 notable wintry blasts from late November and into the first half of December, but it may turn milder or much milder later. However, a sudden stratospheric warming event from later this month and into December could change that outlook to an even colder and more wintry theme for many parts of the country, and would drastically change the overall outlook for December as a whole".
