Matthew Perry 's official death certificate shares new information on the actor's death.

The Friends actor was found in his hot tub a few weeks ago by his assistant, who called paramedics after trying to get his head above water. Officials pronounced him dead at the scene.

On Friday he was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, a famous cemetery for celebrities including Paul Walker and Carrie Fisher. His funeral was attended by his former Friends co-stars.

His death certificate was obtained by The Blast and shows the star's cause of death had been deferred since Matthew's toxicology report is still being processed. Initial reports showed that there was no meth or fentanyl in his system when he died, but for other drugs more in-depth testing needs to be done. The report can take weeks to determine, but those closest to the actor said that he was clean and sober before his death.

The certificate also revealed that it listed his stepfather, Dateline's Keith Morrison as the "informant" who provided the information to the coroner. It also listed Matthew's industry as "entertainment" and his occupation as "actor."

When investigators arrived at Matthew's house, they didn't report any illegal drugs but did find prescription medication that was properly labeled. Matthew had recently opened up about his struggle with addiction in his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.

The memoir dove into Matthew's struggles with drug and alcohol addiction and how after his colon exploded in 2018, and doctors gave him a "two percent chance" at living, he was prescribed opiates which led him to get hooked on street drugs like fentanyl-laced OxyContin.

Matthew was a strong believer in helping others who went through similar challenges. He had said before his death: "When I die, I don't want 'Friends' to be the first thing that's mentioned – I want helping others to be the first thing that's mentioned. And I'm going to live the rest of my life proving that," he said. "Addiction is far too powerful for anyone to defeat alone. But together, one day at a time, we can beat it down."

His friends and family created the Matthew Perry Foundation to help those struggling with addiction in his honour after his death.
