Children and elderly among 10 injured in multi-vehicle crash shutting roads

A dual carriageway has been shut in both directions after a massive car crash that left ten people injured, including children and the elderly.

The A39 has been closed in both directions near Carland Cross, just outside Newquay following a multi-vehicle crash. Devon & Cornwall Police confirmed that they had received reports that ten people had been injured, including the elderly and young people.

But they stressed it was "early days" and there had been no mention of life-threatening or life-changing injuries. However, one is considered serious, police said today.

The multi-vehicle collision happened sometime before 12.17pm between Carland Cross and the Buckshead roundabout. Traffic monitoring service Inrix has noted there is queuing traffic in the area as a result of the collision.

A police spokesperson told the Mirror: "Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a number of vehicles on the A39 at Bodrean near St Erme, at around 12.20pm today, Sunday 5 November. Emergency services are at the scene, with a number of injuries reported, one of which is serious. Local road closures have been put in place. The road is expected to remain closed for some time and motorists are advised to avoid the area."

CornwallLive reported that a Devon and Cornwall Police force incident manager said: "Ten casualties, including elderly persons and children. One of particular interest. No mention of life-threatening or life-changing. Road closure from Trispen to St Erme."

The A30 between Chiverton Cross and Boxheater Junction has also been shut - but this is due to expected roadworks - meaning a number of people were using the route as an alternative way around.
