Arsenal's unbeaten run went at Newcastle but Mikel Arteta's furious rant overshadowed the loss.

Anthony Gordon bagged the winner in the second half in controversial circumstances, leading VAR to conduct a review of over four minutes before eventually awarding the goal, albeit they confessed to lacking all the sufficient angles.

Arteta launched an incredible attack in the aftermath of the reverse, citing the decision as "embarrassing and disgraceful". Arsenal have lost ground to their rivals after failing to leave St James' Park with anything as questions are again asked about their quality at No 9 and in goal with David Raya criticised. Here's the latest from the Emirates.

Arteta's incredible rant

Arteta claimed Newcastle's winning goal was "embarrassing" and a "disgrace" as he saw his side lose for the first time in the league this term.

VAR was forced to review three different aspects of Gordon's goal - whether the ball had gone out, whether there was a foul and whether or not the Newcastle man was onside. He overcame all three checks, but Arteta was speechless that the goal was given and made it known.

He told the BBC: "Embarrassing what happened - how this goal stands, in the Premier League - this league we say is the best in the world. I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week.

Mikel Arteta launches incredible rant as David Raya questioned once againDavid Raya was undone for Newcastle's winner

Carra questions Raya

David Raya has by no means convinced since becoming Arsenal's No 1 and was partly culpable for Newcastle's winner at St James' with Jamie Carragher questioning once again whether the Spaniard can lead the Gunners to a title.

He said on Sky Sports: "Let’s not get bogged down in all the VAR stuff because this is a serious problem now for Mikel Arteta. Raya is at fault again. Again, he’s made the same mistake like the one he made a few weeks ago in another big game against Chelsea. Then, he got away with it but he hasn’t tonight.

"If you look at where the goalkeeper is initially, look at his positioning - he’s outside his near post which is fine, he’s telling his players to get out and now he just keeps edging and edging forwards. And when the ball is played in, he’s further out off his line than he needs to be and it’s a recurring theme with this goalkeeper."

PGMOL explain goal decision

Andy Madley was on VAR duty and took a close look at several incidents that led to Gordon's winning goal. Initially, he checked that the ball had not gone out of play. The replays zoomed in on the ball, with the cameras appearing to show clear space between the ball and the line.

However, those at Stockley Park claimed there were no clear angles to prove the ball had gone out of play. A graphic from beIN Sports appeared to prove that that was the right decision with a slight section of the ball still in touch with the touchline. Following that Madley checked for a foul on Arsenal centre-half Gabriel after he went up for a header with Joelinton,

It looked as though the Newcastle star may have jumped into the back of the Brazilian defender. Madley informed Attwell that no foul had in fact been committed after several checks of the incident.
