Rio Ferdinand is worried about Erik ten Hag's future at Manchester United - telling the Dutchman: "It's more or less crisis time."

The Red Devils failed to impress again on Saturday, as they needed a last-minute winner from captain Bruno Fernandes to beat Fulham at Craven Cottage. Scott McTominay found the net earlier in the game, but his goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

United have suffered some embarrassing defeats this season, particularly at home. Brighton, Crystal Palace and Galatasaray have all won at Old Trafford, and Ten Hag's side are still reeling from back-to-back 3-0 losses to Manchester City and Newcastle.

Speaking to TNT Sports before Saturday's game, Ferdinand gave an honest opinion on United's woes. The Red Devils icon said: "It’s more or less crisis time, I think that the manager is being questioned and scrutiny is really on him for the first time in his tenure.

"There’s obviously problems throughout the club from top to bottom, but the manager and the players are in the spotlight more than the others because they’re the ones out here. In his press conference earlier this week, he said that the players understand his standards.

"But do they? Because they’re not getting to that standard, and they clearly haven’t been all season. I was just listening to him saying that they’re hard to beat, that his side are working hard, but they're not. They’re clearly not.

"At Manchester United, working hard is the first thing you do - and to turn a situation like this around, working hard is an absolute given. There hasn’t been enough this season for me, and Fulham will be looking at them and will believe they can put the nail in the coffin."

Although United went on to beat Fulham, their display does little to ease the pressure on Ten Hag. The former Ajax boss won the Carabao Cup and achieved Champions League qualification during his first year in charge of United but has failed to build on that.

Ferdinand was also critical of United after the game - saying "there was no good performance in that" - but believes the win is "the most important thing". He explained: "The captain stood up, he needed a big performance and we desperately needed a goal.

"He’s stepped up today, they needed someone to step from out of the shadows and into the spotlight and he did that. That man as well (Maguire), he deserves a special mention because he had that head injury very early on and battled through it with a solid performance.

"People were saying that we needed to see a good performance, it wasn’t about that - there was no good performance in that. They got the three points and that is the most important thing."
