Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has acknowledged that he and the club have to learn from “mistakes” that have been made with the club’s recent transfers.

Todd Boehly became the Chelsea owner in the summer of 2022 and has wasted no time in putting his stamp on the club when it comes to transfers. A major revamp has taken place of the roster over the past 18 months, as well as with the dugout.

Pochettino was hired by Chelsea in the summer, replacing caretaker manager Frank Lampard who was brought in after the exit of Graham Potter. Pochettino has returned to England for the first time since he left Tottenham Hotspur in November 2019.

During Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea owner, which has spanned three transfer windows, the club has spent more than £1billion on fees for new players. Some of that has been offset by player exits, including the sales of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, and Christian Pulisic, among others.

Chelsea have spent large transfer fees on several key players including Moises Caideo (£115 million), Enzo Fernandez (£106.8 million), Romeo Lavia (£58 million), Christopher Nkunku (£52 million) and Cole Palmer (£40 million). Despite the significant financial outlays by the club, Chelsea have struggled to climb the Premier League table this season.

The Stamford Bridge club is 11th in the league table with just three wins and 12 points from the opening 10 games. The most recent game was a 2-0 loss at home to Brentford last weekend.

Now Pochettino has spoken about the current struggles that Chelsea are going through in his first year in charge. The 51-year-old spoke honestly about the “mistakes” that have been made in the past, and why he is determined to be a success at Stamford Bridge.

“Things that go against you, you have to try to resist them and try to survive,” Pochettino told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday, as he previewed the club’s League Cup fourth-round contest against Blackburn Rovers.

“You have to be quiet and be strong. And not to lose your balance, because it is easy to blame or say something that is going to affect other people and lead to division in the club. The important thing is to trust the ideas, the judgment and analysis of why certain things have not happened.

“To help the organisation to be better and to improve, and not to make the same mistakes again. The most important thing is to learn from the mistakes.”
