A man accused of two execution-style killings of a father and stepson has died after being shot by police.

Jason Pass, wanted for the murder of Bladimy Mathurin, and Chin Wai Mode, was in a car when police got a hit on his licence plate number and performed a traffic stop. During the encounter, things escalated as police said he charged at them with a knife at which point deputies shot him.

"He charged at them with a knife," said one source, calling the incident an attempted "suicide". Pass was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but later died. Just yesterday, he was identified as the suspect in Sunday's horrific double murder.

Mathurin, 47 and Mode, 27, were fatally shot inside the family's apartment on Sunday night in Brooklyn, New York, according to police, who responded to the shooter and victims at around 10.30pm local time. When officers arrived, they found the two victims with fatal gunshots after an argument over noise with a neighbour.

The killer allegedly fled the scene after the incident, which was captured on surveillance footage. In the distressing video, a man dressed in all black paces outside his neighbour's flat on the fourth floor, when a woman emerges and exchanges words with the neighbour. Moments later, she is joined by her son, Chinwai Mode. The video has no audio, so it is unclear what was said during the dispute.

But just seconds later, school bus driver Bladimy Mathuri marches out of the apartment holding a pair of scissors and angrily confronts the neighbour, the video shows. His wife attempts to drag the dad away but he pushes her back. Moments later, the neighbour takes out a handgun from his jacket and aims it at Mathurin.

He begins to turn around quickly and heads to his apartment when the neighbour opens fire and shoots Mauthrin, who collapses to the floor. Mode, who was also in the hallway, tries to flee from the gunman, but the neighbour fires multiple shots at him, including at least twice after he had collapsed in a pool of his blood next to a staircase.

The neighbour then returns to Mathuri, who is still alive but struggling to get up and shoots him point-blank on his doorstep. He then flees the scene. Paramedics were called to the apartment building and discovered Mathurin and Mode dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso, according to police. Officials have identified the individual but have not named the suspect.

Marie Luc Delille, the wife of Mathurin and mum of Mode, heartbreakingly told ABC 7 NY: "The guy killed my family, the only family I have. This man hates us with every bone in his body. My husband had no gun, no weapon. Why did you bring a gun to shoot my family? Why would you bring a gun to tear my family apart? Why? Why?”

“He’s a muscular guy. He looks intimidating, but that’s not who he is. He is a wonderful guy,” family friend Mickael Louis said. “It’s terrible, heart-wrenching,” said Lidell Robinson, who lives on the same floor as Delille’s family. “I’m moving out. I’m not going to take it here now. I don't want this. I’m sick, I have nerve [problems], I have heart problems.”

Leonard Hayes, another neighbor, said he heard shots in the hallway Sunday night and then looked through his front door’s peephole, only to discover a body slumped on the floor. “We just moved here recently,” he said “He was in front of his door. You’re supposed to be safe in your home.”
