Woman's 'genius' overnight trick with 95p item banishes windowsill mould

It's a new year, but many are still struggling with the same household problems as before – particularly condensation and mould.

When the cold weather outside meets the warm air inside, it can cause condensation to form on windows. This can lead to black mould, which in turn can cause nasty health problems if left untreated.

Luckily, we've been sharing several tips and tricks for banishing the mould for good – from homemade formulas to devices that can help and also the correct temperature you should keep your home at.

One woman has shared her best tip for getting rid of windowsill mould - and it involves minimal effort.

Samina often shares cleaning hacks on her TikTok page @samina_iltaf, and recently posted a video of her windows, which have both condensation and mould on them.

Firstly, Samina removed the condensation using a window vacuum, but you could just make sure to wipe it all off using a squegee.

She then sprays a product called Astonish Mould & Mildew spray, which can be purchased in Wilko for just 95p.

While the product in itself can do wonders, Samina has a trick which can help it work even better when you have stubborn mould.

She places paper towels or toilet paper around the seal of the window, and then sprays the product generously onto it. Samina says this "helps keep the liquid on the window seal".

In the video, Samina films the windowsill the next morning, where she removes the paper by wiping it along the sides, and the mould has disappeared.

Social media users were impressed by the results in the comments, with one person saying: "So trying this!".

Another added: "Wow. Perfect," and a third simply said: "So clean."

A fourth said: "This is a great tip! Thank you. I'll be trying it tomorrow."

Keep in mind that while cleaning the mould is important, you should also find and treat the cause to avoid it returning.

For example, a builder recently visited a property where they couldn't find the cause of the damp and mould – but he was eventually able to find and treat it.

If you're unsure, the same builder has shared a smart trick to find out if your home is suffering from mould or damp, which can lead to expensive repairs.
