Married At First Sight's Georges defends Peggy as she's accused of gaslighting

Married At First Sight UK star Georges Berthonneau has defended his wife Peggy Rose as fans continue to accuse her of 'gaslighting'.

It hasn't been an easy marriage so far for Georges and Peggy, who appear to have continuously clashed due to their opposing morals and very different lifestyles. In particular, Peggy has made it crystal clear that she's not a fan of Georges online gaming career, where he often succumbs to challenges set out by his fans and followers alike – including squatting live on camera.

From the beginning of their marriage, Georges' career and hobbies have been huge red flags for his wife Peggy, and in last night's instalment of the E4 programme, viewers watched with sympathetic eyes as Georges broke down in tears after discovering that the Married At First Sight group are not his biggest fan and do not trust him.

It was a close call for the couple, after Peggy decided to leave during the commitment ceremony, but Georges was desperate to have one more week in the experiment in a bid to try and work on his marriage with Peggy after spending weeks on end living together and building a connection.

After the emotional scenes aired last night, viewers flocked to social media to call out Peggy after her husband broke down in front of the other participants and the relationship experts. Several viewers accused Peggy of being 'cruel' to Georges, while other claims she was 'selfish' and 'gaslighting' towards her husband.

"I can’t believe nobody is calling Peggy out. She’s awful, if a guy treated a women like she’s treating Georges, he’d be called controlling/gaslighter. She lied telling him everyone dislikes him. At least he has a personality, he should tell her where to go," one viewer fumed after last night's dramatic episode.

"I really like Georges. It’s such a shame Peggy can’t see past a stupid video. I laughed watching it. It was harmless fun. He clearly adored her, such a waste," another echoed. While someone else insisted: "Peggy doesn't know how good she has it with Georges. She's so mean to him all the time and he just takes it and he hasn't pushed the intimacy either. She doesn't deserve him. He needs someone who doesn't take life so seriously."

After Peggy faced immense backlash following the dramatic scenes, Georges has now defended her in a social media post. "100s of supportive messages tonight, thank you for everyone’s kind words," he wrote on Instagram. "Remember Peggy isn’t a bad person, she’s beautiful inside and out. Don’t be nasty on the internet, on her pictures, in her DMs or anywhere. If you support me then support me by not being nasty towards her."

Viewers are still unsure as to whether or not Peggy and Georges are still together, but many viewers are hopeful that the pair have managed to work on their relationship and break down the barriers that were holding them back from happiness.

Married At First Sight UK continues tonight at 9pm on E4.
