Strictly's Zara McDermott in tears over Sam Thompson surprise after show exit

Strictly Come Dancing's Zara McDermott got emotional on Monday's It Takes Two as she discussed her exit from the show on Sunday night.

The former Love Island star turned documentary maker, 26, was eliminated over the weekend after she and dance partner Graziano Di Prima lost the dreaded dance-off against soap star Adam Thomas and his pro partner Luba Mushtuk. Appearing on Monday's It Takes Two, Zara got emotional as she spoke about her show exit.

Zara said: "It's been a real up and down of emotions the last few days of just processing everything. I think today was the hardest morning ever just not going to training. I literally texted him [Graziano] the moment I woke up with a sad face like 'me'. I spent seven weeks, 12 hours a day, with this man and now, not anymore, it's sad! It's really sad!"

Later on the show, host Fleur East surprised Zara with a sweet pre-recorded message from boyfriend Sam Thompson. Sam, 31, said: "I just wanted to make this video and tell you how incredibly proud I am and all your friends and all your family are of you and what you've achieved over this past seven weeks.

"I remember you said, when you started this, 'I'll be gone week one' but you lasted seven entire weeks. What you've achieved, is so admirable, I love you." To which Zara was seen wiping away tears, she said of Sam's support: "It's just honestly amazing.

"I mean having him, especially there on Saturday night, was really special being able to just kind of see him in the audience and give him a big wave before and having him there for that moment was just so special."

Later, after watching back her best bits, Zara got emotional again, breaking down in tears, she said of what she will miss the most about Strictly: "This person [Graziano] here and I said I wasn't going to cry anymore today, but I am, here I am again. This human being right here [Graziano] is what I'm going to miss the most because he is the most special, beautiful soul in the world."

It comes after Zara said on Sunday after her fate in the competition was revealed: "I have had the time of my life. Just to be here is incredible. Thank you to the judges and my amazing partner obviously. My fellow contestants are just incredible. It has been the most amazing experience. I can’t believe it’s over but I am going to be here in spirit every week supporting them."
