Lionel Messi's barber appears to have confirmed that the Argentinian World Cup winner has won an eighth Ballon d'Or after uploading a photo of the pair on Instagram.

Messi is back in France this week hoping to once again take home the Ballon d'Or award, but is up against strong opposition. As well as the Argentine, Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe have been nominated.

Haaland enjoyed a remarkable first season in Manchester, scoring 52 goals in 53 games in all competitions on the way to winning a famous treble with Pep Guardiola's team.

It was another impressive year for Mbappe too, who found the net 41 times for PSG, whilst winning the club's fifth Ligue 1 title in six years in May. Despite the competition it appears it is in fact Messi who will add an eighth Ballon d'Or crown to his CV though, and this has been backed up by his barber.

Taking to Instagram Luis Andres Rivera shared a photo of himself and Messi posing post-haircut, ahead of his trip back to Europe. Dropping the biggest Leo Messi off ready for tomorrow," the barber wrote. "Special day where in the name of God he will win his golden ball number 8.

"Thank you Leo for always trusting in me and blessing me with making possibly the biggest cut of my career. WILL BE SEEN BY THE WORLD." Messi recently left Europe following a stint with PSG to join David Beckham's Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami.

While he enjoyed a hot start Stateside, Messi and his Miami teammates struggled for form towards the end of the season, with injury hampering his finish to the campaign. A poor run saw Messi and co miss out on a playoff spot, as they finished second-bottom in the Eastern Conference.

Despite his struggles at club level, it was his heroics in an Argentina shirt that has put him in contention for an eighth Ballon d'Or. On what is expected to be his final World Cup, Messi led his country to the title in Qatar, defeating France on penalties last December.

Whilst the Inter Miami captain has become the Ballon d'Or's most succesful winner during his career, Messi admitted it is victories as a team that mean the most to him on the back of his World Cup win. "I have said it many times, the Ballon d'Or is very important due to the recognition at the individual level, but I never gave it importance, between quotes, the most important thing for me was always the awards at the group level," Messi said.

"I was lucky to have achieved everything in my career and after the World Cup, I'm thinking about that award much less, my biggest award was that and I'm disguising my moment. If it arrives, good, and if not, nothing happens. I was lucky to achieve all my goals in my career and now I have new goals with this club."
