Peace lilies are one of the most popular houseplants; beautiful and easy to care for with lush, deep green leaves and pretty, flag-like white spathes. However, not all peace lilies are guaranteed to bloom - some are just more prone to flower than others.

But now one woman has shared the secret to growing healthier, happier lilies. And it costs as little as 13p. Posting on the UK Facebook page, the green-fingered lady stated that after giving her peace lily a simple kitchen scrap item, she noticed a flower starting to emerge.

Maria Baligasa wrote on the social media site: "Good morning. Super excited with my peace lily. After putting banana peels, they started to grow flowers faster. It is working so well!" She then shared before-and-after photos of her houseplant to demonstrate her point.

There is merit behind her claims. According to the experts at Lawn, potassium is a "vital nutrient for peace lilies" that "helps with flower production". And advice on gardenerspath.com says you should fertilise peace lilies with an evenly balanced fertiliser – such as 10-10-10 NPK.

In fertiliser formulas, NPK refers to the ratio of the elements of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the mix. To feed indoor specimens, they recommend three easy options – water-soluble or liquid fertilisers, slow-release pellets, and plant food spikes.

Aside from providing the houseplant with the correct nutrients, there are other conditions peace lily owners need to do to ensure that their plant flowers. Peace lilies prefer bright, indirect sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, while too little light can inhibit blooming, so it's best to place them near a north or east-facing window where they can receive filtered light.

It's also important to remove yellow or dead leaves to encourage new growth and blooming; pruning your peace lily also helps redirect energy to the production of flowers. Experts also recommend regularly cleaning the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and improve photosynthesis.

Meanwhile, just last month, experts shared a simple trick to stop you overwatering your plants. According to a specialist at , using the humble ice cube could be the cool answer to your plant problem. For instance, adding a few bits of ice to the soil of your plant will provide hydration as it gradually melts. This will give the soil enough time to absorb just enough water for the plant’s needs.

The experts also state that the change of temperature from the ice actively promotes blooming – especially in plants such as orchids. Orchids require a change in temperature between night and day in order for them to bloom properly, so using ice does this efficiently.
