For all the times you have lost the wine bottle cap but need to reseal the bottle, there is a life hack to help you out - and it's brilliant. A huge number of bottles of wine come with a twist-off cap, rather than a cork, nowadays but it can be easy to misplace or break the cap. And unless you plan to drink a bottle of wine in one sitting, you run the risk of ruining the rest of the bottle.

When a bottle is left open, the wine inside is left exposed to air, which begins the oxidation process. Oxidation can cause wine to go bad and may turn it into vinegar. And bacteria and other microbes can also cause wine to spoil, changing its flavour and consistency.

So what to do when you can't find the lid? Chantelle Fen - a British content creator and TikTok star - has the answer. She shared her quick hack in a video last year and it went viral.

"I don't know who needs to know this but... you can use water bottle lids on WINE BOTTLES," she wrote on the video, which has accumulated a massive 630,000+ likes.

Of course, you need to make sure the lid is clean. Rinse it out - ideally with dish soap and hot water - and let it dry properly. Then gently screw or press the water bottle onto the wine bottle opening, being sure to check the seal is tight to prevent air from entering and affecting the wine. This is the most important step as a good seal will keep your wine fresh for a much longer period.

In fact, using a water bottle lid could be more beneficial than using the original lid. It has an even smaller opening, which will help prevent dirt and germs getting inside the bottle, which might degrade the taste and ultimately become a danger to your health safety.

It comes after a wine connoisseur shared her clever hack and urged people not to put a cork back in an open bottle. Speaking on her account, Wine Educator Warner Boin from the US, said: "I know it sounds crazy but if you ever have an instance where you have leftover wine, don't put the cork back in the bottle. I have a way better tip that's gonna change your life."

She continued: "If you were to put the cork back on a bottle of wine that's half empty you'll see half of this still has oxygen inside it and corks are porous. This is still gonna allow oxygen to get into your wine. Not great. What you really want to do is reduce the amount of oxygen to wine ratio."

Warner then recommends decanting the left-over wine into a Mason jar, or any other type of air-tight container that is a similar size to the amount of wine you have left, and make sure it's sealed properly.

Warner concluded: "There is so much less oxygen in here than in the rest of the bottle. You can get different Mason jars depending on the amount of wine you have left. I swear by this. It will make your wine still taste fresh even a couple of days after you've opened it, whereas a day after I open a bottle of wine and put the cork back on, I can tell the difference."
