The dangers of cheap Halloween make-up have been exposed as Brits are warned about allergic.

Many costumes now used dramatic makeup to take disguises to another level. Health experts, however, have warned those dressing up, they need to be careful about what they use on their face and skin .And using the wrong products can result in proper nightmare that can have substantial risks, including skin irritation, dryness, and potential allergies.

Health experts at Now Patient say there are dangers of cheap Halloween make-up and have highlighted the importance of checking ingredients and explained what to do if you have an allergic reaction.

Risks of cheap Halloween make-up:

1 Unknown Ingredients: One of the most significant dangers of cheap and counterfeit make-up is you often don't know what ingredients are used. It means some products are unregulated and could contain harmful substances, such as heavy metals, allergens, or toxins that can irritate the skin, eyes, and even be absorbed into the body.

2 Skin Irritation: The use of low-quality or counterfeit make-up can lead to skin irritation, redness, itching, and rashes. In some cases, these symptoms can be severe and long-lasting.

3 Allergic Reactions: Allergic reactions are common with counterfeit make-up. You may experience symptoms like swelling, hives, or a severe rash. It's crucial to recognize these signs early to prevent them from worsening.

4 Eye Infections: Eye make-up, in particular, poses a risk of eye infections. Contaminated or low-quality eye products can lead to conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other eye issues.

5 Long-Term Health Risks: Repeated exposure to dangerous chemicals in counterfeit make-up can have long-term health consequences, including increased risk of cancer or other chronic conditions. Studies in recent years have found Halloween face paints that contain heavy metals like lead and cadmium, and powdered makeup marketed to kids that are contaminated with asbestos.

If you suddenly have a reaction to the product you or if you you notice any signs of an allergic reaction for example itching, redness, swelling, rash immediately stop using it. Wash your face with a mild, hypoallergenic cleanser to remove any residual make-up and irritants. Over-the-counter antihistamine creams can help reduce itching and inflammation.

If symptoms persist or worsen people are advised to consult a dermatologist or healthcare professional for proper evaluation and treatment. And if you suspect the make-up product is counterfeit or unsafe, report it to the relevant authorities, such as a consumer protection agency.

Navin Khosla, pharmacist at Now Patient spoke about the risks of using cheap make-up at Halloween and what to do to avoid it. He said: "When it comes to makeup, particularly during occasions like Halloween, it's crucial to exercise caution and prioritise your skin's well-being.

"One key piece of advice is to always read the labels on make-up products. Take a moment to scrutinise the ingredient list, and focus on recognizing and trusting the safety of the components used. If any ingredient raises doubt, don't hesitate to delve into some research or consult with a dermatologist, as their knowledge can be invaluable in guiding your choices." He advised to consider where make-up is purchase from - especially if it is online and strongly advised being cautious and avoid unverified sources while paying careful attention to ingredients. Hypoallergenic products he advised are likely to reduce the risk of allergies.

The pharmacist added: "Remember, the dangers of cheap Halloween and counterfeit make-up are real, and it's vital to prioritise your health and safety when choosing make-up products. Your skin's health and well-being should always come first”
