Soap actor Adam Thomas says participating in Strictly Come Dancing has done wonders for his self-esteem - as he admits he used to struggle with his confidence in the past.

The 35-year-old former Emmerdale star has been wowing audiences in the long-running BBC dance contest after being paired with Russian dance professional Luba Mushtuk. Over the past six weeks, fans have watched the duo show off their Cha-cha-cha, Jive, Waltz and Tango skills - as well as showing off their Couple’s Choice dance in the most recent episode of the dance show.

And each week, Adam has felt more empowered and confident, having won impressive scores from the judges and the approval of the viewing public. In a new interview, Adam - who currently stars in BBC school drama Waterloo Road - explained how taking part in Strictly has boosted his self-belief.

He told STV: “It’s been a little bit of therapy for me doing this show, it really has. I’ve found a bit more self-confidence within myself, I felt like I struggled with that beforehand… which is probably the best thing to come out of this show for me. I doubted myself quite a bit going into this show, I never really thought about how much I did doubt myself. Just because I haven’t done it before doesn’t mean I can’t do it and I just feel like I’ve just found an inner confidence.”

Adam went on to say he is "proud" of himself and his achievements on Strictly so far. He added: “I feel like when I do that I am just going to feel a lot more confident in myself and that I just need to believe in myself that, just because you haven’t done it doesn’t mean you can’t, and I think it’s just going to help with every aspect of my life."

Indeed, Adam seems to be making dramatic changes to his life since signing up to Strictly - telling fans he has decided to quit alcohol in an effort to live a healthier life. He said via Instagram : "OK so I've been pondering on the idea for quite some time now. Not that I’m an alcoholic but I do love a tipple now and then ... but not for enjoyment anymore which is the scary bit, but more for escape from the stress and worries of life itself.

"I've tried a few times to do it before, but this time I wanted to just put it out there, just so I know I've got to stick to it this time. I know it’s not going to be easy but it will be worth it ... well it better had be."

Adam has been supported on his course to live an alcohol-free life by his twin, Love Island star Scott Thomas. The striking 6' 3" reality star replied to Adam's post by writing: "Wow didn't expect this on a Monday night!" he replied with a love heart emoji. "So proud of you my brother let's do this together! Twin power xxx".
