Sometimes, despite our best efforts, wear and tear happens throughout our homes. From broken cupboard doors to spills while we're cooking that never seems to rub off properly, to stains on items like sofas, despite the fact that nothing has been spilled on them.

And that's exactly what happened to one woman who was so confused about the cause of her sofa stains that she took to Reddit to ask people whether they knew what could be causing them, as she hadn't accidentally dropped anything on the sofa, and she wanted to know how best to clean it, depending on what the stains were.

She frustratedly posted on the cleaning tips forum writing: "What is causing these stains on our couch?! We haven't spilled anything on it, we sit on it fully clothed. It hasn't gotten wet in any way. What is causing these stains and is there a way to prevent them?"

Despite the fact that the woman said the sofas hadn't gotten wet, the stains did look suspiciously like something had been spilled - but when people told her what they thought it was, people were seriously grossed out.

Someone bluntly wrote: "Sweat", to which the original poster wrote: "Ewww." Another added: "Sweat, environment dust, grime, skin flakes. When wet, it'll create these stains. As much as I love the look of fabric sofas, I avoid them as much as possible."

Another Redditor insisted that it looked like a water stain, commenting: "Looks like water stains to me, I had almost the exact same stain on my couch of the same color and it was from water. Generally, if you have a different type of stain and you want to clean it up, you should use distilled water. Tap water or even purified water has minerals in it and those minerals cause water stains when they dry.

"There's a chance that getting a spray bottle and carefully spritzing it with distilled water will help lift the stain, but it's a big job and you might just move the stain around if you aren't careful. You can consult professional companies who'll come out and clean your couch for you, but they usually charge for cleaning the whole couch at a minimum, not just the stain."

Someone else said: "Do you sit on that couch with jeans? It could be crocking which is colour transfer due to agitation", and the woman said that her partner does sit on the sofa in black jeans, so a Redditor added: "Sounds like your partner has some ferocious back of the knee sweat lol."
