Jamie Carragher has compared this current Tottenham outfit to the Liverpool side of 2013/14 who came within a whisker of winning the Premier League.

Spurs have made a sensational start to the new season and currently sit five points clear at the top of the table, having played one game more than their title rivals. Their latest outing came away at Crystal Palace, where Ange Postecoglou's men ran out 2-1 winners in a hard-fought Friday night clash at Selhurst Park.

That result prolongs their unbeaten run, with Postecoglou yet to taste a league defeat as Spurs boss. In that time, the north Londoners have come up against the likes of local rivals Arsenal, as well as fellow big-six sides Manchester United and Liverpool.

To remain unbeaten is some feat and has sparked a discussion over whether Spurs can spring an almighty surprise and go the distance this season by winning their first league title in more than half a century. Carragher has had his say on the matter and identified something that could help them in their quest.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the win away at Palace, Carragher claimed: "They haven't got a squad like Liverpool or Manchester City have had over the last few years when they have challenged for the title. They are looking to grow the squad and it is a brilliant start. They won't have too many games this season, the only thing that will get in the way of the Premier League is the FA Cup."

The Liverpool legend then went on to identify some other sides that have been helped by having only the league to focus on. Carragher added: "Who knows how far they will go in that [the FA Cup] and they could get a difficult draw.

"Over the last 10-12 years, there are a couple of teams who stand out for me who didn't play European football - Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers, who almost won the title, and Newcastle last season.

"Those two sides, it wasn't just the positions they found themselves in the table, it was the way they played football, full of energy and running. Their intensity took them to their achievements. The manager wants his team to be the fittest in the league and he has a great opportunity to prepare his team in the right way for each game."

Postecoglou was pressed for comment on his thought's over a potential title charge after Friday night's win, but kept his feet firmly on the ground. He explained: "What's important is we're giving our supporters joy and hope.

"That's what football clubs are there for. Dreams last as long as they do until someone wakes you up. We'll see."
