Any Harry Potter fan will be well aware of the many magical items of the Wizarding World we wish were real - from flying broomsticks to moving pictures. But it turns out, American fans of the franchise are only just realising that some of the 'most magical' items in the franchise aren't fictional at all - and actually just British.

One of the most magical times at Hogwarts is no doubt Christmas, and those who have seen the films will have watched with open mouths while the students tuck into mouth-watering feasts that appear like magic. But Americans have taken to a popular online forum to share that they believed some of the British desserts existed only in the blockbuster series.

Among those treats many thought were fictitious were treacle tart, rock cakes and spotted dicks. One US Potter fan wrote: "I thought it was something like butterbeer or chocolate frog lol. I found out it was real two months ago."

Many on Reddit noted how "delicious" treacle tart looks, but many thought they were fake, with another saying: "Just learning from this right now that it's not a magical food."

Spotted dick, a traditional British steamed pudding dessert, also confused many fans of the franchise, with one person saying: "This will always shock me, every single time I read it not only in Harry Potter. I can't believe there's a dessert with that name."

Wizarding fans also admitted they thought rock cakes were something that had been made up because Hagrid was so awful at cooking. One said: "I was convinced it was just that Hagrid makes cakes that happened to be rock hard, so Harry nicknamed them rock cakes.' Adding: 'They're actually rock hard rock cakes?!" In reality, rock cakes are a light, crumbly tea-time treat which many British students will have had the pleasure of eating at school.

Joining the list of perfectly normal British treats that some people thought were made up are peppermint humbugs and Christmas crackers. Another person wrote: "I was so confused when two characters were pulling apart the crackers and there was stuff inside of them. But I was just like, 'oh this wacky magical world and their novelty-filled giant cheezits!'"

Another added: "Wizard crackers. I was SO confused. Like, why are they finding hats and other prizes in crackers? Took me a long time to find out what crackers were and that they're a popular holiday tradition. Now I'm mad we don't really do them in the US!"
