A woman has been sentenced to life for murdering her ex-boyfriend after he was chucked into a woodchipper while he cleared trees.

Sharon Graham, 63, attempted to spin Bruce Saunders' death as a horrific accident - but investigators discovered the killing had been part of a deliberate plot to take his house, car and £430,000 life insurance payout.

Bruce died after he was fed into an industrial woodchipper outside the home in the locality of Gomboorian in Queensland, Australia on November 12, 2017. Cheers and shouts could be heard from his family in the courtroom as Graham was found guilty of his murder.

Brisbane Supreme Court heard that Mr Saunders had been clearing vegetation with Gregory Roser and Peter Koenig - two men Sharon Graham had been romantically involved with - when he was hit on the head with an iron bar before being fed into the machinery. Intended to appear like an accident, the horrific incident left behind only Mr Saunder's legs, up to his thighs. The following day, Graham began to discuss over a cup of coffee how she would use the money she hoped to get from the murder plot, and slept in his bed with another man.

Mr Saunders was "worth more dead than alive" to Ms Graham, it was heard, as she was named the sole beneficiary of his will. She would take on his car, house and savings, and would also gain $830,000 Australian dollars from his life insurance policy. An emotional victim impact statement from Bruce's son, Blake Saunders, revealed Graham had asked to keep half of his father’s ashes following the funeral to make it appear as if she was grieving. He said: "This (was) all part of your evil plan to make it look like you were grieving … but really it was you trying to hide your guilt,". He also said that Graham sat beside him in the front row at the funeral service, and pretended to cry, and told her: "You are a despicable human"

On Friday, the jury spent less than a day deliberating before handing down a guilty verdict. Supreme Court Justice Martin Burns said Graham appeared to regard Bruce as both an "inconvenience" and a "source of money to secure your future", adding: "There are no words for the likes of you. Even if there were, I do not wish to detract in any way from the statements … which have eloquently described the real horror of what you did, and the profound impact it has had, and will continue to have. By my observations you have displayed the hallmarks of deep-seated psychopathy .If at any point the authorities seriously consider your release, I ask they keep that observation firmly in mind.”
