The King is not alone in his concern about the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

His Majesty has been briefed by aid agencies on the situation which has already cost the lives of more than 2,300 children. Hundreds more innocent civilians will die unless there is a ceasefire or pause in the conflict. It is also imperative that more aid is allowed into Gaza.

The supplies of water, food and medical goods delivered so far are not nearly sufficient to meet the scale of what has been described as an acute humanitarian disaster. Israel has the right to defend itself but its operation in Gaza must be proportionate and conducted under international law.

Too many children have already died in this conflict. More will be killed if Hamas continues its rocket attacks and Israel pursues its plan to collectively punish the Palestinians for crimes that were not committed in their name. To care for the plight of the innocents is not to take sides. It is to state that in the horror of war humanity must prevail.

Dementia toll

An estimated 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia. That number is forecast to double over the next 20 years, according to a study published today. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s can place a terrible toll on those affected, their families and loved ones. Too many do not have access to the support and care they need.

As Britain’s population ages we need to do more to ensure the elderly can live their lives in the dignity and security they deserve. The Government should not only be supporting this generation of pensioners. It should also be putting in place plans to support the next one.

Let it be good

The last-ever song recorded by the Beatles is to be released four decades after it was written. It was a long and winding road finishing the track but it’s finally come together.
