Gary Neville has admitted that he is still unsure on Andre Onana despite the Manchester United goalkeeper's midweek heroics in the Champions League.

Onana, 27, joined the Red Devils in the summer in a £47.2million deal after United parted company with long-term No.1, David de Gea. However, Onana has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford after making several costly mistakes.

The Cameroon international did redeem himself on Tuesday night when his last-gasp penalty save against Copenhagen in the Champions League helped United to a crucial 1-0 win - but that alone hasn't won everybody round.

When he was asked for his thoughts on Onana during a social media Q&A, Neville made his feelings clear by responding with a shrugging emoji and "for now," indicating that the jury is still out on United's new No.1.

Neville was one of the many who felt his former club needed to move on from De Gea, who made plenty of errors himself last season. And while United had seemingly done just that, it now appears that a remarkable return could be on the cards for the Spaniard.

According to a new report from The Sun, De Gea has been approached by United about a short-term return to provide goalkeeping cover. Onana is set to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year, meaning United would be without their current No.1.

Onana could miss up to eight matches if, as expected, he is included in the Cameroon squad. It had already been outlined that United were caught off guard when Onana decided to return to international football after quitting the national team during last year's World Cup.

Summer signing Altay Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton are the club's other two goalkeepers, but with the former yet to make an appearance and Heaton far from a regular, De Gea - who is currently back in Manchester still a free agent - could be presented with an opportunity to bid farewell to Manchester United fans in person after leaving during the off-season.

De Gea made 535 appearances for the club across a 12-year period after signing for United from Atletico Madrid back in 2011. Bringing him back to the club would represent an embarrassing U-turn from United, who eventually decided against giving the veteran shot-stopper a new contract after months of uncertainty.
