Owen hasn't spoken to Shearer in years after bust-up with ex-Newcastle teammate

Michael Owen has revealed he has not spoken to his former Newcastle teammate Alan Shearer since they were involved in a spat on social media back in 2019.

The spat occurred following the release of Owen's autobiography 'Reboot'. In the book, Owen explained how he and Shearer fell out after the Newcastle legend became manager in 2009, with the pair previously "good mates".

Owen claimed Shearer blamed him for Newcastle going down that season, with Shearer winning just one of his eight games in charge and Owen joining Manchester United on a free transfer when his contract expired at the end of the campaign.

In his autobiography, Owen wrote: "He was brought in at St. James' Park as the saviour, the local boy. It could have been a great story. But he failed. Newcastle United were relegated. Perhaps rather than examine his own shortcomings, it felt easier to blame Michael Owen."

After the book came out, Shearer hit back on social media posting a clip of Owen saying: "So all I did for six, seven years... I hated it, I couldn't wait to retire."

Shearer also wrote: "Yes Michael, we thought that also, whilst on £120k a week..." Owen then hit back: "Not sure you are as loyal to Newcastle as you make out mate.

"I distinctly remember you being inches away from signing for Liverpool after Sir Bobby Robson put you on the bench. You tried everything to get out."

He continued: "My new book has made plenty of headlines this morning but they need to be put into context. I've stayed quiet for years whilst receiving plenty of criticism but there are two sides to every story. Once you've read the book you'll make your own decision...."

Four years later, Owen has revealed he has not spoken to Shearer at all since their social media spat. "I haven't spoken to Alan Shearer since he criticised my book, no," Owen told DAZN Bet.

"Alan works at the BBC and I work on other channels, so we rarely cross paths. I would say hello and shake his hand, things like that, but no we haven't spoken since then."
