When it comes to eating out at a restaurant, most people put on their 'fancy clothes' and make sure to remember their manners. But one restaurant has come under fire for taking things a little too far, after adding an extra charge to parents who fail to control their children.

Taking to Reddit, user LPineapplePizzaLover shared a photo of a note at the bottom of the restaurant's drink menu outlining the extra charges diners could incur. It reads: “Gratuity of 20 per cent may be added to parties over six, separate checks, birthday menu. Adult surcharge: for adults unable to parent $$$. Share charge $3 (£2.50). Be respectful to staff, property, and self. No respect, no service. No store food permitted in dining area.”

Fellow Reddit users were astounded by the excessive fees, as one commented: “If I read this at a restaurant I would probably leave. Charge for unruly kids and a ‘share charge $3’ like who cares if I wanna share my food once I've pay for it?”

Another wrote: “The number of red flags on this menu, I'd just go ahead and say no thanks. I mean, the parenting thing is one bit, but if they can't get their s**t together enough to deal with setting a price that deals with their credit card fees, and their solution is to show the cheap price and add a surcharge? If that's the case, I don't have a lot of faith in the quality of their supply lines, or in the rigor of their kitchen safety procedures.”

A third fumed: “Any place that has a share charge isn’t even going to get my business. I don’t eat a lot, and if I want to share with someone I shouldn’t have to pay $3 to use a plate/fork. Also, $$$$ fee? That’s stupid, if parents aren’t containing their kids, ask them to leave.”

One savvy Reddit reader took to Google to check the restaurant’s reviews, but their findings are even more shocking. They revealed: “I Googled the restaurant name. Here are some of the reviews: “1. The owner came out and told me he was adding $50 (£41) to my bill because of my children’s behaviour. My kids watched a tablet until the food arrived, ate their food and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill. Pretty sure the owner is doing drugs in the back. Disappointed by the experience.

“2. If you have children, absolutely avoid this place at all costs. Holy moly - the most disrespectful owner made a huge scene in front of the entire restaurant because our children were ‘running through the restaurant’ - they were down by the river... we were told we need to ‘go to Burger King and Walmart’ and that we were bad parents. They have a $50 surcharge for ‘bad children’. We were a group of 21 and our server was amazing and was overly apologetic. Terrible business practice, we will never be back.”

Elsewhere on the menu it detailed cash is preferred over card, and those who use the latter may be penalised in the form of additional charges. It states: “Customer notice – Prices listed on our menu reflect our cash price … we offer savings when you pay with cash.”

This small print also irritated Reddit readers, as another comment read: “They’re also adding a 3.5 per cent surcharge for paying with a card and disguising it as a discount for paying with cash. Good way to lose your merchant account.”

A separate Redditer affronted by the fee for cards wrote: “Extra charge for not using cash? 20 per cent for separate checks and using the birthday menu? Yeah f**k this place.”
