Fern Maguire has issued a sweet six word response to her footballer husband after his huge Champions League win.

The Manchester United defender scored the winning goal against FC Copenhagen where he managed to silence critics. Harry Maguire had been facing harsh criticism from fans and pundits over his recent performance. Yet his winning header has seen him receive heaps from praise, including from devoted wife Fern.

Taking to her Instagram, Harry's wife reposted a picture of Harry celebrating his smart second-half header. Alongside the picture, Fern gushed: "Cream always rises to the top" followed by a red heart emoji. Maguire dedicated his winning goal to the late United legend Sir Bobby Charlton after he died over the weekend aged 86.

Following the match, he told TNT Sports: "It’s one of those nights where it’s just meant to be. We were meant to win that game. That’s the win we wanted to dedicate to Sir Bobby, his family as well. It’s been a tough week for us, going to Sheffield United and coming away with three points isn’t easy and then the news about him passing, it affects everyone at the club, everyone in the dressing room. We’re really going to miss him and I’m happy we could get this win for him."

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes was full of praise for Maguire after the game, as he said: "Tonight has been the story of two separate players that have come under scrutiny and delivered - we see the goal, a great header from Maguire, a big goal for the club." While Rio Ferdinand also sang Maguire's praises. He added: "I’ve been a big critic of Harry Maguire, when he’s not been playing well, when I’ve felt his performances deserved to be critiqued. But I’m delighted that he’s shown the great character to come back like he has done."

It comes after Harry's wife Fern showed her support to the star after his gutting England performance last month. Maguire suffered an embarrassing clanger during England's match against Scotland at Hampden Park. He was dropped for the friendly but came on at half-time, looking to impress. However, things didn't go to plan as he ended up scoring an own goal. During the match Harry was savagely booed by the home fans throughout his stint on the pitch, with Hampden Park erupting in cheers when he thumped the ball into the back of his own net.

Fern reposted Harry's upload of pictures of him during the match to her ownInstagramStories, with three red heart emojis. Harry's original post said: "Enjoyable camp with the lads - always a pleasure representing my country. Everywhere they goooo." England manager Gareth Southgate also led the passionate defence of the defender after the full-time whistle blew.

He said: "It is a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly, and I think our fans recognised, 'Ok there might be a bit of heat from our own supporters but we are not going to have it from others getting into him'." Teenage sweethearts Harry and Fern – who met when Maguire was playing for Sheffield United's youth squad – married last June at the Chateau de Varennes in the south of France.

Fern was just 16 when the pair first got together and Harry was 18. They have now been together over ten years. In 2018 they got engaged shortly after Valentine's day, when Harry popped the question during a romantic getaway to Paris. A year after their engagement, the football star revealed Fern had given birth to the couple’s first child, Lillie Saint Maguire. Just 13 months later they welcomed their second daughter Piper Rose in May 2020.
