Shaft star Richard Roundtree dies aged 81 surrounded by his family
Richard Roundtree, the star of the hit Shaft film series, has died aged 81.
His manager Patrick McMinn confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film. The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated."
The Hollywood legend died from pancreatic cancer at his LA home surrounded by his family, Deadline reports. He had a mastectomy in 1993 after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Roundtree started his career as an model but landed the role that would make him a star when he was 28. He became the detective John Shaft in the hit 1971 crime thriller. He then went on to make two sequels, Shaft's Big Score and Shaft in Africa, and a TV show but it only lasted seven episodes. He was dubbed the first Black action hero.

He's been in a number of big films and TV shows (Getty Images for SHAFT, Warner Bros.)He reprised the role in 2000 to the delight of fans, starring alongside Samuel L Jackson.
He's also had a number of other big roles, including Speed Racer, Brick, Family Reunion and Lethal Weapon.
His agency also shared a statement following the death. It read: "Artists & Representatives Agency mourns the loss of our friend and client Richard Roundtree. His trailblazing career changed the face of entertainment around the globe and his enduring legacy will be felt for generations to come. Our hearts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
