Cole Palmer apologises to Chelsea boss Pochettino for throwing bottle at him

Cole Palmer has said sorry to Mauricio Pochettino after hitting the Chelsea boss with a water bottle.

The £42.5million summer signing from Manchester City scored his second goal for his new club on Saturday, converting from the penalty spot against Arsenal. And when Mykhailo Mudryk's speculative effort made it 2-0 after half-time, it appeared Palmer and co. were cruising towards three points.

But then things unravelled. Robert Sanchez's poor clearance gifted Declan Rice the chance to pull one back and with six minutes left, moments after Palmer had been replaced by Reece James, Leandro Trossard levelled matters. As if the moment wasn't despairing enough for a frustrated Pochettino, he then had to deal with being hit by a water bottle.

"When they scored their second goal I was getting a drink," Palmer explained to Chelsea's club website. "I went to throw the bottle away, as you do, but didn't look. I just saw it loop dead slow and hit the gaffer. I said sorry to him and apologised properly after the game. Hopefully, he won't drop me for that!"

Indeed, the 21-year-old insisted his relationship with his new manager was a positive one: "We get on well," he added. "I try to show him every day in training what I can do. Work hard and just try to repay him because he puts a lot of faith in us."

Palmer's switch from the Premier League champions in the transfer window was considered a shock, given he was seemingly being given a more prominent role by Pep Guardiola. Indeed, he scored in both their European Super Cup and Community Shield games at the start of the season.

However, despite Saturday's slip-up, and the erratic form of the Blues, Palmer appears to have few regrets. And he's vowed to get better as Pochettino's men rebuild from their ropey start.

"I came to Chelsea to try to make an impact," he added. "I’m happy I’ve done it straight away. Credit to the lads, the lads are all good, helped me settle in and stuff, but I’ve just got to try to improve every day and give more and more."
