Britney Spears has released her memoir the Woman in Me, in which she reflects over various aspects of her life and a career, including the conservatorship she was once under.

The singer, 41, references the title of the book - which has been released today amid much excitement - among its pages, hinting at the potential meaning behind the choice. It seemingly ties to lyrics that feature in one of Britney's songs.

The Woman in Me is an apparent reference to a lyric in I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman - which was released as a single from her eponymous third album in 2002. The lyrics of the song explore some of the challenges of adolescence.

Britney is heard singing at one point in the song: "I'm not a girl, don't tell me what to believe. I'm just trying to find the woman in me." The lyrics continues with her singing: "All I need is time, a moment that is mine, while I'm in between."

She mentions "the woman in me" in the memoir itself, such as whilst discussing her conservatorship. Britney was under the conservatorship - which saw others have control over aspects of her life - for more than a decade until 2021.

Sharing her feelings over it, Britney said that at times she felt like a "trapped adult woman". She had previously said in the Woman in Me that the conservatorship had "stripped [her] of [her] womanhood" and infantilized her.

She commented in the newly-released memoir: "This is what's hard to explain, how quickly I could vacillate between being a little girl and being a teenager and being a woman, because of the way they had robbed me of my freedom."

Britney said: "There was no way to behave like an adult, since they wouldn't treat me like an adult, so I would regress and act like a little girl; but then my adult self would step back in - only my world didn't allow me to be an adult."

Suggesting that she's since found an identity as an adult, she added: "The woman in me was pushed down for a long time." Britney went on to claim that she was encouraged to be "wild" onstage but to be a "robot" elsewhere during that period. She said that she was "deprived" of indulgence and adventure, adding that it was "death to [her] creativity as an artist".

Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me, published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, is available Oct. 24 wherever books are sold.
