Vladimir Putin 'in intensive care as body double meets Brazilian President'

Vladimir Putin is in intensive care while his body double is carrying out engagements with other world leaders, a Telegram channel has claimed.

The Russian president is said to be "connected to equipment that monitors his vital parameters" and is under medical supervision. Meanwhile, his "well-coiffed" double is allegedly carrying out his duties, including having a phone conversation with Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and meeting Kazbek Kokov, head of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.

The claims come after a Telegram channel alleged Putin suffered a "cardiac arrest" on Sunday evening and was then resuscitated in the intensive care ward in his residence. The channel also claimed that doctors "assessed the condition of the Russian president as stable and serious" and are looking at the future "without optimism". The Kremlin strongly denies these claims and has branded them "fake news".

The message, translated from Russian, said: "While the unexpectedly well-coiffed double of Russian President Vladimir Putin is having a telephone conversation with the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and meeting with the leader of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, Kazbek Kokov, the real Putin lies in a room equipped as an intensive care ward in his residence, connected to equipment that monitors his vital parameters. After cardiac arrest on Sunday evening, the attending doctors assessed the condition of the Russian President as stable and serious and considered the prospects without optimism."

The channel went on to claim that those in Putin's closest circles have been thinking about hosting a round table to decide what to do in the future. But it is claimed that there will be "irreconcilable contradictions" on how the country should be run if Putin is out of the picture.

It said: "It was Putin who was the centre of balance of the system, and no double, of course, can replace him in this capacity. The collapse of the system without Putin is practically a foregone conclusion."

Posting the claims about Putin's alleged cardiac arrest, the Telegram channel said: "Doctors performed resuscitation, having previously determined that the president was in cardiac arrest. Help was provided on time, the heart was started and Putin regained consciousness." There was no immediate response from the Kremlin to the claim but officials have previously strongly denied Putin, 71, suffers from health problems.

The post on General SVR – which claims, without having ever provided any proof, to have an inside source on his entourage – continued: "At about 21:05 Moscow time, security officers of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who were on duty at the residence, heard noise and sounds of falling coming from the president's bedroom. Two security officers immediately followed into the president's bedroom and saw Putin lying on the floor next to the bed and an overturned table with food and drinks.

"Probably, when the president fell, he hit the table and dishes and knocked them onto the floor, which caused the noise. Putin convulsively arched while lying on the floor, rolling his eyes. The doctors who were on duty at the residence and located in one of the adjacent rooms were immediately called."

The channel alleged that "the president was moved to a specially equipped room in his residence, where the necessary medical equipment for resuscitation had already been installed", adding that the president's condition was "stabilised" and he is "under constant medical supervision".
