Prince William and Kate Middleton certainly seem to have a fairytale romance. Since their spectacular royal wedding back in 2011, the couple have gone on to welcome three children together - Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and little Prince Louis, who is five.

On rare occasions, they have also given a glimpse inside their home life together, from sweet date nights to cooking for each other, and enjoying the great outdoors with their kids. In fact, despite their royal position, the couple seem to share much in common with the rest of us - including rows.

One royal author has claimed that it's 'not all sweetness' in William and Kate's household and that - like many couples - they do argue behind closed doors. Tom Quinn's new book, Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family, tells the story of the royal family through interviews with palace staff and insiders to determine how their upbringing has shaped their adult lives.

In it, he reveals William's reaction when they do fall out - and it's heartbreaking. Tom writes: "Of course, privately, William and Kate, like all couples, fall out, row, shout at each other and say unkind things to each other, but Kate is an appeaser by instinct and William always gives way as he had more than enough emotional turmoil, divorce and disruption as a child. He hates confrontation."

During an interview with Fox News Digital, he elaborated further on his claims about William and Kate's rows, and said that far from wanting to appear as the 'perfect couple that everyone else should try and emulate', the Wales' are keen for the public to know that, at the end of the day, their relationship is just like anybody else's.

Tom continued: "[Kate] said, 'Like every other couple, we have days when we are really, really cross with each other, or days when we don’t talk to each other.' They want to be seen as an ordinary couple with the same stresses of having children, work, and everything else that life brings."

Elsewhere in the book, the author revealed that William and Kate have nicknames for each other. The Prince is said to sometimes call Kate 'Babykins'. The Princess, meanwhile, refers to William as 'babe' but also sometimes pokes fun by referring to him as 'baldy'! Prince William and Kate were overheard using nicknames for each other at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2016. They referred lovingly to each other as "darling" and "babe".

William previously revealed that it was his mother, , who gave him his first ever nickname - "Wombat". In a 2007 interview with NBC's Matt Lauer, he explained: "It began when I was two. I've been rightfully told because I can't remember back that far. But when we went to with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that's the local animal. So, I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do."

Kate, meanwhile, was nicknamed "Squeak" as a young girl while attending St Andrew's School in Berkshire. She later recalled: "I was nicknamed Squeak just like my guinea pig," she said. "There was one called Pip and one called Squeak because my sister was called and I was Squeak."
