Heartbroken widow to take husband's ashes on epic road-trip to 'reset her soul'
A heartbroken widow is setting up to take her husband's ashes on an epic road-trip after losing him to cancer.
Jes Kallus-Vianes, of Round Rock, Texas, married the love of her life, James Allen, in March 2020 as the pandemic lockdowns were brought in. But what started out as back pain was diagnosed as cancer and despite the doctors' best efforts, Jes was there holding James' hand when he died on February 23, just two days before his 38th birthday.
: "In February of this year I lost my amazing wonderful husband James Allen to kidney cancer. His diagnosis came as a huge surprise to us and his death was very quick and unexpected.
"He was diagnosed on Dec 11th and he passed away on Feb 23rd. He spent most of that time in the hospital getting to come home for our first and only in our new house and his very last night here on this earth."
Still reeling from James' death, Jes is hoping to go on a trip with her dog and James' ashes. In a fundraiser hoping to raise money for the trip she wrote: "Together we loved to travel. Together we travelled to Colorado and the Rocky Mountains twice, San Francisco, and central California, including staying in a magical guest house in the redwoods that had a bathtub among the trees. We had some of the best meals I have ever eaten. But travel was special for us, it was what we saved our money towards."

Jes recalled: "James was starting to have some back pain and was getting hot flashes and just really sweaty at night. We thought nothing of it. I was planning on getting us set up with life insurance and annual check up after our road trip. But that didn’t happen.
"After multiple urgent care trips, and two Emergency Room visits we found out that what everyone said was a herniated disc, turned out to be a shattered L4 vertebrae caused by stage four kidney cancer. It was basically eating his bones.
"He had emergency back surgery to save him from being paralyzed. He was back at home and walking for Christmas. We got to spend Christmas at home with both our parents with tamales and queso, his favourite.
"After Christmas we were getting him all set up with radiation and immunotherapy. He had a great Oncologist and they were very hopeful about his treatment since he was so young. But again things change."
James got one more trip home before he died. She wrote: "Then again because of our crazy healthcare system we had to make this crazy trip home. Little did I know that it would be his last night on earth. We again ate eldorado in the hospital to prepare for the ambulance dance from our house, to the infusion place, radiation and back to the hospital. We had one last night to cuddle and watch a movie at home.
"His big body couldn’t handle the cancer medication and I was there holding his hand when his heart stopped in the cancer office on Feb 23. Just 2 days before his 38th birthday. On that day my heart shattered into a million pieces. The love of my life is gone and I’m left to figure out how to live life without the huge person my husband was."
Jes now hopes to take an "epic trip" and take James with her. She wrote: "I don’t know what I’m going to do with his ashes just yet. But I’m taking them with me. I need to sit in the car beside him going on an adventure one last time.
"I just want to go and reset my soul after losing the love of my life."
