A mother was left horrified after discovering the real reason her husband decided on the name for their child. The couple initially couldn't see eye-to-eye on the perfect name for their daughter, until they eventually settled on calling her Maeve.

It had been her husband who'd suggested the name after he had a 'lightbulb moment' but once their daughter turned six, the upset mum finally found out the shocking truth behind his decision. When she attended a dinner with her husband's uni friends, they told her the awkward truth.

Taking to Reddit, the distraught mum explained: "Me and my husband are on a double date with him and one of his old friends he hadn't seen since college. It was a lovely evening, until the name of our baby girl came up, to which his friend got a weird expression on his face.

"I immediately thought something was up and pushed him to tell me what. Then he said, 'that was the name of his college girlfriend.'" She added her husband had been secretive and never mentioned the name of his ex-lover, adding: "I had heard about this girl and knew that he was in love with her and she broke up with him… he had never mentioned her by name. As you can imagine, the evening was ruined by this bombshell."

The woman went on to say that she thinks it's 'incredibly creepy' that her child is named after a woman that her husband dated and loved - and was forced to change her daughter's name. "I told him I'm gonna change her name legally to something else. My daughter doesn't mind, but he does, and insists that I'll 'damage her sense of self'.'" However, the mum defiantly wrote: "I'm gonna do it anyways."

Social media users were left divided as some said while her husband should have been truthful, she shouldn't change her daughter's name. One person said: "Hubby should have mentioned that he had dated someone with that name, certainly. And your feeling of hurt and betrayal is understandable. But trying to change the name of a six-year-old because of your hurt is massive overkill."

Others agreed: "I understand that what your husband did was creepy and it's something you need to talk about. But that is not a reason to change a child's name. It is stupid to place your jealousy over your own child." A third person added: "Maeve would make you think of your daughter first and not your husband's ex."
