The future of veteran head coach Bill Belichick has come under scrutiny following the New England Patriots' historically poor start to the season but it appears that he has the backing of Robert Kraft.

After beginning their new campaign with a 1-5 record, the 71-year-old's contributions for this season at least have been subject to widespread criticism. In truth, his attempts to mastermind a new era following the departure of legendary quarterback Tom Brady in 2019 have fallen decidedly flat.

Between them, their record between 2001 and 2019 was one of the most envied in sport, as the Patriots won six Super Bowls to establish a dynasty. However, since then New England have failed to make the playoffs in two out of their last three seasons - last winning a post-season game in Super Bowl LIII.

It would be fair to say that the opening weeks of this season - their worst start in 23 years - represent the nadir of Belichick's time in New England. Despite these woes, his job security does still appear to be strong, especially after he allegedly agreed a 'lucrative multi-year new contract' during the past off-season.

NFL Network Senior National Insider Ian Rapoport made the revelation, stating that the testimony of his sources add 'some context to the discussions about the [future of the] greatest coach in NFL history'. In a video posted alongside this, he added some more context by confirming that Kraft would not be looking to make an immediate decision on the head coach's future as things stand.

Speaking on 'NFL GameDay Morning', he explained: "With the Patriots struggling as they really never have, Bill Belichick's been a topic in New England. Would Robert Kraft make a move mid-season? My understanding is that he would not be inclined to make a move.

He added: "His contract [is] one of the most closely held secrets in New England. That said, I think there that it is fair to day there was some intrigue or uncertainty surrounding him. Now contractually he is appears to be locked up long-term.

Despite his proclamations, it is not known how long Belichick's purported new contract is for, as questions abound over Kraft will decide to part company with the legendary coach. What is for certain is that the team's CEO retains the utmost respect for the man who helped to make the Patriots one of the most successful teams in the sport.

Speaking in March, Kraft said: "I still believe in Bill. I think Bill is exceptional at what he does and I’ve given him the freedom to make the choices and do the things that need to be done. His football intellect and knowledge is unparalleled from what I’ve seen.

"Just when you talk to him, the small things analytically he looks at. But in the end, this is a business. You either execute and win or you don’t. That’s where we’re at. I think we’re in a transition phase."
