'How I met' stories are much-loved conversation starters for many, whether it's in the groom's speech at the wedding, reminisced about on special family occasions, or hilarious 'How I met your mother' tales. They can reveal a host of untold secrets, welcomed or not.
That's exactly what happened to one woman when she found out her parents had been spreading a fake story about how she met her husband. The made-up details which had been shared behind her back for nearly eight years were inappropriately untrue, it wasn't until her shocked Aunt confronted her she realised the extent of the risky rumours.
In a post shared on Reddit, the woman asked readers if she was in the wrong for wanting to avoid her parents, after she found out about their spread of lies. And it's here where the details of their shocking story came to light.
The woman explained that her aunt pulled her aside at a family get-together saying she had heard something 'very out of character' and wanted to know if it was true, but little did she realise how far-fetched it was. She said: "According to my parents, I met (my husband) while online soliciting for a proposed threesome with my ex-husband as a last-ditch effort to salvage my then-failing marriage.
"However, during this tryst, I supposedly realised we had a connection which led us to be together while choosing to dissolve my previous marriage." The woman then went on to share that her parents had spread even more 'gross details' to wider members of the family and that she'd refrain from diving into those details publicly.
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
The insight left her shocked as it was the complete opposite of what actually happened. As she explained: "NONE of this was true. We met at work through mutual friends and our romantic relationship developed slowly over a period of time. I had repeatedly told my parents how we met and even introduced our mutual friends to my parents at our wedding as the ones who got us together".
When taking to Facetime to confront her parents about the alarmingly untrue story she found herself even more shaken up, as her parents snapped back at her saying 'It's exactly what she told them'. "When I refuted this, my dad proceeded to get angry at ME saying that I must have amnesia as my mom stormed off refusing to discuss the issue. The rest of the call is me sitting in silence, while he attempted to gaslight me. I’m dumbfounded", said the woman.
Further on in the post, the shocked daughter explains that their elaborate story was told to far more than just her Aunt as her cousin got in touch with her to say she heard the story nearly eight years ago, and that she was so uncomfortable about it that she didn't know how to respond.
While her cousin may have been lost for words readers in the Reddit comment section certainly didn't hold back offering a wave of support, with many saying they didn't blame her for wanting to cut out her parents. As one person said: "What is your parents' motivation for spreading those stories? Avoid them, they are toxic and would not help your marriage."
This was followed by readers offering advice on how to respond, as one person said they should send this message: "Don't contact us again until you've emailed everyone you told your lies to and confessed in writing. As for forgiveness, we'll revisit that after your confessions and not an instant before."
