A woman has revealed why she decided to break up with her long-term boyfriend after she discovered he had bought her a luxury cruise for her birthday. Sharing her thought process on Reddit, people couldn’t help applauding her after reading.

Explaining that her family and friends had been giving her grief for her stance on the gift, she admitted she needed some validation that she wasn’t going crazy. She wrote: “My birthday is coming up and three days ago I found out what my birthday present was from my boyfriend - tickets to a cruise. His sister spilled the news thinking I would be excited and I'm not. We live together and I found the gift and know it's for me. I sound so ungrateful but I'm not. This gift just proves to me that things will never change.”

Justifying her feelings, the woman went on: “The first thing is this gift isn't for me. I do not like cruises because I get really bad seasickness and nothing I do helps. I also told him what I wanted to do for my birthday which was go to a Renaissance festival..

“I have already taken the week off from work for it in preparation to go this fair. I have purchased tickets and am saving month to month so that I can spend money without it affecting finances at home. Why would he book tickets at the same time as the time I took off to go to this festival? Also, this cruise wasn't cheap at all so it's basically wasted money because I’m not going.”

Fed up, the woman explained that she told her boyfriend before that she doesn’t feel like he listens to her and only buys her gifts that he likes. She added: “I love him but I'm so done. This has been a recurring conversation in our two and a half year relationship. The next thing to do is talk this out and end things.”

The woman finished her post by adding: “The effort he went to, it made me sad because that means he could have put in a little effort about the things I like. If he had even just gotten me a ticket for the Renfaire festival or accessories from online or even a piece of an outfit that had to do with Renfaire, it would have made my entire month. It would have meant that he listened and got me something that interested me. I'm not even annoyed anymore. I feel nothing about this.”

People were quick to comment on the birthday girl’s post, with the vast majority on her side. One person wrote: “Good on you! You go, girl!” While a second reader penned: “I think the fact that he knows you have plans for the day of your birthday, and has deliberately double booked you after the fact, is a much bigger red flag than the obviously s****y present.”

Another user added: “I bet after she breaks up with him, he'll go around telling everyone all the "great" things he did for her, however ungrateful she was about his "thoughtful gift".” And someone else added in reply: “She can post ‘My boyfriend got me a week of vomiting for my birthday, isn’t he thoughtful!’”

One reader suggested she make it known how misguided the gift was, writing: “When you break up, tell him that you found the tickets. ‘You know I get seasick, so this trip would make me actively miserable. You also know that I have plans for my birthday, and this trip conflicts with those. At best, you don't listen to me or care about what I want. At worst, you are actively sabotaging my plans to make sure I'm unhappy on my birthday. Either way, I'm no longer interested in being in a relationship with you'.”
