Gogglebox's Julie Malone breaks down in emotional post after death of dog Dave
Gogglebox star Julie Malone broke down in tears as she took to social media to thank her fans for sending her words of comfort after the family dog, Dave, sadly died.
The 61-year-old Channel 4 star has been hit hard by the passing of the family dog - which she shared with her husband Tom and their children Shaun, Vanessa and Tom Jr. The family revealed on Wednesday that their beloved rottweiler had passed away - and have hinted that he battled an illness in his final days.
In the days and hours since they shared the sad news, the family have been flooded with kind messages from Gogglebox fans who loved seeing the pooch join the family on their sofa. On Friday, Julie took to Instagram to thank those that had sent her notes of condolence - but she was unable to fight back tears as she shared her thanks.
Addressing followers in a video from her family home, Julie said: “Good morning everybody. I thought I’d come on and just say a great big thank you for all your messages. They do mean a lot. It makes me so proud that Dave touched so many people. Your messages have been amazing and we have got comfort from reading them all and reading how much Dave meant to you as much as he meant to us. He’ll never be forgotten.”

As Julie rounded out her message, she was unable to fight back tears and began to cry. She said through heartbroken sobs: “Enjoy your Friday. Enjoy Gogglebox. I’m sorry. I didn’t want to do this. I didn’t want to cry. But thanks very much. Your words really do, did mean a lot. Have a nice weekend. Thank you. Bye.”
The family announced Dave’s death on Wednesday, sharing a video clip of the dog enjoying the sunshine. They wrote alongside the short clip: “RIP Dave xxx There are no words to describe you ,or how much you meant to us.This was you on Sunday waiting for your Dad to come back and he had only gone out to the car x We are all going to miss you so much.”
Dave was a much loved member of the Malone family and often appeared on Gogglebox (Channel 4)Dave made regular appearances on Gogglebox alongside the Malone family’s other dog, Tilly. The family pet caused chaos during one episode when he knocked Tom Sr out of his seat during an explosive burst of energy in hilarious scenes. And during the pandemic, viewers were amused when they watched Dave being confused over the family using face masks.
Many fans have lamented the loss of the dog, having felt they got to know him as much as the Malone family while tuning in to Gogglebox each week. One heartbroken viewer wrote via Instagram: “So sorry to hear this, he made me laugh so many times on Gogglebox, RIP Dave.”
