A student left her shoe behind at a prince's party in what has been dubbed a "real life Cinderella moment".

Prince Christian of Denmark's birthday bash saw one of the Western world's most timeless fairytales repeat itself with a 21st century twist as the hopeful student left behind a golden stiletto. Anne-Sofie Tornso Olesen, 18, had been at the eligible bachelor's glitzy dinner at Copenhagen's Christiansborg Palace on Sunday when she pulled the hopelessly romantic stunt.

Palace staff were clearing away the rooms following the celebrations the following day when they discovered the sparkling heel. But instead of following the path of Charles Perrault's iconic love story by going house to house, the 18-year-old Prince instead posted on social media in a bid to find its owner.

Posting from the Danish Royal Household's official Instagram, the royal appeal aid: "When the guests at Her Majesty The Queen's gala table yesterday had gone home, this lonely stiletto shoe was left at Christiansborg Castle. The owner is welcome to contact to get it back."

Anne-Sofie, an actress who has starred in Danish series Base Boys, has since come forward to claim the garment. She told news outlet Se Og Hør: "It was meant to be a fairytale ending à la Cinderella." The actress won her invite to the royal bash in a tombola, attending to represent her local town.

Also attending the red carpet event was a host of young European royals, including Princess Amalia of The Netherlands and Sweden's Princess Estelle.

She was pictured greeting Denmark's monarch Queen Margarethe II - currently Europe's longest-serving monarch following the death of the late-Queen Elizabeth - as well as Prince Christian's father, the Crown Prince Frederik. After dancing the night away at the glamourous event, Anne-Sofie admitted she thought it would be "a bit funny" to leave the shoe behind. "It's a chance you won't get again," she said.

"It's not because I think that now I'm going to marry him," she told a local TV outlet. "But I kind of hoped that someone would think it was funny, and then it also creates attention for the royal house."

But despite the heartwarming tale, Anne-Sofie wasn't quite as enchanted to meet the Prince as the stunt may suggest, after admitting they'd had a brief conversation - the details of which she can't remember. " I think it had something to do with what he thought about the whole thing - and about having invited all those people into the castle," she said.

Prince Christian is meanwhile has been rumoured to have been dating an Italian heiress, meaning a fairytale wedding may not be on the cards just yet. He was pictured with Marie Chiara Bourbon-Two-Sicilies, descendant of the now defunct Italian royal family, at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year, although the 18-year-old would-be princess later hinted that any rumours of a relationship were just that.

The young prince is currently second in line to the Danish throne behind his father, Prince Fredrik.
