'My teen's Halloween outfit is inappropriate - she says I'm sexualising her'

Halloween is a time for fun festivities and dressing up, regardless of your age. From trick or treating to Halloween parties, there's so much fun to be had. And of course, it's a time for those who want, to wear something a little more risque, which may be frowned upon at other times of the year.

But one mum was left mortified when her teenage daughter revealed her Halloween costume - and she was less than impressed with the "latex costume" her teen wanted to rock. When the mum told her daughter the costume wasn't "appropriate for her age", the 15-year-old flipped out and accused her mum of "sexualising" the outfit.

The desperate mum wrote into Kidspot's agony aunt column asking for advice from Jordana, saying that recently her daughter and her pals had recently got into "cosplay", so she wanted an outfit that was "latex" for Halloween - but the mum said she was having "second thoughts" and said "absolutely not" at the costume.

Her daughter was "mad" and "started crying" when her mum denied her the costume, but the mum tried to explain to her that "those costumes aren't appropriate for her age", but the 15-year-old accused her mum of "sexualising" the costume, rather than just seeing it for what it is.

The mum was stressed because she'd been "sulking" all week and was even "ignoring her homework", and she said that she even tried to encourage her to discuss other options, but was left deflated when she realised that they were "still revealing" - but she was worried that she was just being a "prude."

Jordana responded to the worried mum, agreeing that if that's her "boundary" as a parent, then she should "stick with it." She wrote: "It can be helpful to ask your child their intentions behind the costume but be careful not to body-shame them in the process. It's normal for teenagers to be curious about sex and for them to explore their sexuality."

Jordana did warn her not to "shame" her in general, however, because it might encourage her to hide her actual costume from her. She also encouraged her to keep the focus on her costume and "not her body", sharing that latex really isn't a comfortable material to wear. Jordana wrote: "Sit down and try to come to a compromise, a different costume, offer to host her and her girlfriends at your place, including her in the process will ensure a healthier relationship in the long run."
