Matheus Nunes has struggled to live up to expectations since completing his surprise switch to Wolves in July - but that hasn't deterred Liverpool from rekindling their interest in the midfield maestro.

Nunes, 24, was one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe last summer once it became clear that he could be on the move from Sporting Lisbon.

Despite persistent links to Liverpool and interest from a host of elite clubs, it was Wolves who acquired Nunes in a club-record £38million deal. However, it appears as though the Portuguese midfielder could be on the move again just five months after arriving at Molineux.

According to a fresh report from The Telegraph, Liverpool are set to rekindle their interest in Nunes with a view to finally landing the playmaker this month. It is claimed that before Nunes' switch to Molineux it was agreed he would be allowed to leave for another club once he acclimatised to life in the Premier League.

That agreement would open the door Liverpool to make a move for the midfielder, who has struggled to make a significant impact at Wolves, with the Midlands outfit currently in the relegation zone.

But if there were any fears over Nunes' form, then the man himself has already insisted that he is capable of much better and is "pretty sure" that he will prove that during the second half of the season.

Speaking to The Express and Star last week, Nunes said: “I want to be better than I was in the last six months, and I think these first six months of 2023 are going to be better individually for me. I have that in my mind and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to show that.”

Liverpool's interest in Nunes emerged just before their 3-1 defeat against Brentford on Monday night. And speaking after the match, former Anfield favourite Jamie Carragher stressed that the Reds have to address their midfield issues in the transfer window this month.

The Reds had been expected to overhaul their midfield in the summer but are now expected to accelerate their plans in their wake of their disappointing Premier League campaign.

After claiming that Liverpool 'no longer looked like a Jurgen Klopp team', Carragher told Sky Sports: "They need a complete revamp in midfield. It's like they're trying to play the Jurgen Klopp way without Jurgen Klopp players. They're now like a normal team in terms of the press, but they're still playing that high line.

"We talk about Virgil van Dijk, he's not been at his best, but no matter how good you are, you need protection from your midfield. If you don't get protection you've got no chance."
