Your birthday is the one time of year you get to be a little bit selfish, as you have an excuse to make plans with your friends and family that are centred around activities you want to do, rather than keeping everyone happy. But one woman has been left feeling "so hurt" after her parents pulled a "selfish" stunt that ruined her big day.

The woman, who did not specify her age, said the issues around her birthday plans were caused by her 11-year-old sister, whom her parents dote on. For her birthday this year, the woman planned her own party that was going to be held at her house, and organised all the details herself, right down to the cake.

But just one day before her party, her parents decided to cut a slice of her cake to give to her little sister - simply because the youngster was "crying for it" and they wanted to make her happy. However, the action left the woman devastated, and caused her to cancel her birthday plans entirely.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "My sister is the miracle golden child. She always gets what she wants whenever she wants. My parents are always trying to please her and make her happy. They always make a big effort on her birthday and do whatever that she asks for but they can barely remember mine and they are always conveniently 'broke'.

"My birthday was a few days ago and the party was scheduled for the day after. I have been planning for weeks and invited all my friends. I bought the food, snacks and drinks and picked up my custom-made cake which I was really excited about, it was just perfect. The night before the party, I noticed that my cake which was in the fridge had a huge slice missing. When I asked my dad, he shrugged and nonchalantly said that my sister was crying for it and it was just a small piece.

"I yelled at him asking him why he would do something like that when it wasn't even bought with his money and that my sister could have waited for tomorrow. I ended up calling it off because I was not able to change the location last minute as I didn't have the means to and I was so hurt, I didn't want to host it at home anymore."

Commenters on the post understood why the woman was hurt, but many of them said she shouldn't have cancelled her party because of the cake, as the event would have brought her some happiness as she would have been able to spend time with her friends. One person said: "Cancelling the entire thing may have been a bit disproportional to missing out on the opportunity to present a pristine cake, but you do you, I guess."

While another added: "You don't have to be a kid to enjoy and value your birthday celebration. That was YOUR cake and I would have been depressed about it too. I wouldn't invite your parents or your sister to your birthday parties in the future," and a third posted: "You don't cut into a birthday cake before the party and certainly not to appease a spoiled child. They'll be shocked when you go no contact."
