Kate Garraway 'taking back happiness' with girls' night amid Derek's health woes
Kate Garraway revealed she's 'taking control of her own happiness' by carving time for herself amid her husband Derek Draper's health woes.
The Good Morning Britain presenter has been caring for Derek ever since he was first hospitalised in March 2020 with coronavirus, after suffering numbness in his hand, headaches and breathlessness. Despite being declared free of COVID-19 following 10 weeks in a medically induced coma, he has been left with long-term complications since contracting the virus and now requires round-the-clock care.
He was discharged on a trial basis in April 2021 but has been readmitted to the wards multiple times with numerous health issues, including kidney failure, brain inflammation and liver damage. As Kate has been juggling caring for her beloved husband and working at ITV, she hasn't had a lot of time to herself.

She said to Best Magazine: "I've been experimenting with ways to take control of my own happiness.
"I now deliberately carve out time to give myself the gift of doing something that only helps me. It might be only ten minutes of something physical, such as stretching, pottering in the garden with a mug of tea or reading something not related to work. I've put some fun girls' nights in the diary with Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh and Susanna Reid."

Earlier this month, Kate admitted Derek wasn't showing any signs of improvement. Speaking at the Pride of Britain Awards, Kate said: "He’s not doing great, to be honest. But the battle goes on." She added that she had secured a meeting with Steve Barclay after a recent on-air plea to speak to the health secretary privately about the people stuck in the healthcare system long term.
"I’d like to come and talk to you – not about Derek by the way, this is not me trying to get something for him," she tearfully told him during the virtual interview. "This is about representing millions of people across the country who, like me, in one hand feel like they’re holding the life of their loved one and in the other hand punching away at a system and it isn’t about money."
The TV presenter also recently opened up about being constantly worried about losing her husband, who requires full-time care.
