Laughing gas will become illegal next month, with dealers facing up to 14 years in prison - but will the move really stop people from using it?
The Home Office confirmed the ban on nitrous oxide would come into force from November 8 and serious repeat offenders could be jailed for up to two years. The substance will become a class C drug.
Laughing gas is one of the most commonly used drugs by 16 to 24-year-olds today. It is colourless and often sold in metal canisters. If used a lot it can lead to nerve-related symptoms such as falling over, not being able to walk, or experiencing tingling or loss of sensation in the hands and feet. Some users have reported nerve-related bladder or bowel problems, incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Police have reported the link between using the drug and antisocial behaviour, such as intimidating gatherings on high streets and in children's parks, and empty canisters strewn across public spaces, the Home Office said.

Secondary legislation will make possession of laughing gas an offence. Users could receive an unlimited fine, a visible community punishment, a caution which would appear on their criminal record or a prison sentence. However there will be exemptions for legitimate use such as in catering or on maternity wards, where it is used as pain relief for women in labour.
