Kate's 'bone-crushing' gesture shows 'swagger and inner belief', says expert

The Princess of Wales performed a "bone-crushing" gesture that showed her swagger and inner belief on a surprise visit, a body language expert has claimed. Kate was in the stands in Marseille to cheer on the England rugby team who recorded victory in their World Cup quarter-final against Argentina - and will now face South Africa in the semi-final at the weekend. But not content with just supporting from the stands, Kate, who is the royal patron of the English RFU, paid a surprise visit to the dressing room, where she congratulated the players for their achievements after their victory.

And according to body language expert Darren Stanton, the princess performed a powerful gesture - and even appeared starstruck at meeting some of the players. Speaking on behalf of Betfair Slots, he explained: "There's a fantastic picture of Kate in the dressing room, where she’s shaking the hands of the rugby players. It’s a fantastic handshake. If you zoom in on that you can see it's a real bone crusher handshake, which is in a positive sense.

"It's not a weak handshake, she’s got a really good grip. She went on to place her right hand on one of the rugby players. This is normally seen as a power gesture, but we know Kate isn’t like that. It's a general gesture of respect and rapport from her towards the other person.

"She also placed her left hand on the top of his arm, which is her way of saying she is genuinely happy to meet him. The rugby player appeared a little bit overwhelmed. There's also another great picture of Kate meeting Courtney Lawes, who is much taller than her. It's a great moment because her eyes are wide open and she almost appears starstruck.

"If you zoom in on her face, she’s so genuinely happy to meet him. I can't think of a time when I've looked at Kate and noticed she's faking an emotion or smile. What you see is what you get."

Meanwhile, Darren believes Kate's appearance at the rugby also demonstrates her growing confidence in her royal role. He added: "The thing about Kate Middleton is that she's developed such a massive level of confidence and inner belief, so you put her in any situation and she’ll be her natural self.

"If we look at how the Princess of Wales has evolved, she used to be pretty quiet and downplay a lot of things. Whereas she handles things with a lot of self-assurance nowadays. In terms of how she walks, she walks with a swagger. In some context, that could mean arrogance but not with her. It shows confidence as she doesn’t look back at who is with her.

"If she’s with William, she’s not checking on him, which is something King Charles tends to do with Queen Camilla. With Kate, she takes big strides, which is related to inner confidence. She doesn’t make any nervous gestures. We sometimes still see the likes of William and Harry put their hands in their jacket, which is a self-reassurance gesture. We never see any sort of insecurity or distress signals from Kate. All her gestures are very deliberate and positive."
