Mike Tyson's true role with Francis Ngannou explained ahead of Tyson Fury fight

Mike Tyson has insisted he isn't training Francis Ngannou but instead mentoring him ahead of his fight against Tyson Fury.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou makes his boxing debut next weekend against Fury to kick off Riyadh season in Saudi Arabia. The Cameroonian has joined forces with Tyson to help him prepare for the fight as 'Iron Mike' is working alongside Ngannou's MMA coaches Eric Nicksick and Dewey Cooper.

Tyson has cleared up any confusion about his role in the fight by downplaying his role as a trainer as he told GQ : “I’m not a trainer. I’m a coach. A trainer can be bought by anybody. ‘Train this guy. Hey, train this guy,’. I’m a coach. I’m loyal to my guy. When he gets beat up, I feel the punches.

"When he’s hitting, knocking out a motherf***r, I feel the victory applause.” Those around Tyson then admitted that he doesn't have an official role in Ngannou's camp, but said, “He’s been a mentor to Francis throughout the training process, popping in and out of training sessions as time permits for several weeks.”

Fury has already signed a contract to fight fellow heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk as their undisputed clash could take place as soon as December. Ngannou plans to spoil any chance of the blockbuster showdown taking place this year by putting Fury out of action for the foreseeable future.

Tyson thinks Ngannou only needs to land one clean punch against Fury to pull off the upset as he told Mail Online : "I am helping Ngannou. I am learning what he is able to do. He's able to do so much more than I anticipated. He has what it takes to knockout anything or anybody standing in his way. Once he lands a punch on Tyson Fury's jaw he is going to knock him out too. Nobody can survive that.' He's making some money for his family.

"Let me do what I need to do and then when it's time to box I will box. Boxing people need to keep out of my personal business. Fury's not the all-time great but he's one of the all-time greats. He's really high up. He can do greatness right now. He's always going to bring a good night of boxing, fight hard. You've got to try and hit him with a shot to knock him cold out because he always gets back up and fights hard."
