Bill Belichick is on the verge of potentially breaking two NFL records as New England Patriots head coach.

Belichick has been in charge of the Patriots since 2000, where he has also served as the team’s general manager. He has guided the team to six Super Bowl wins, with Tom Brady as his star quarterback.

Brady spent 20 years with the Patriots, winning three NFL MVP awards along the way before he left the franchise at the end of the 2019 season. The future Hall of Famers signed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he would win yet another Super Bowl.

Since Brady left the Patriots, Belichick has only guided the team to one play-off run in the past three seasons. The best finish came when the Patriots reached the Wild Card round in 2021, before losing to the Buffalo Bills.

Now that Brady’s time in New England has been over for more than three years, a record has emerged of how the Patriots have faired with and without the quarterback. With Brady on the team, the Patriots have a 219-64 (71%) winning record, but that falls to 80-93 (-12%) without the former quarterback on the team.

The Patriots currently stand at 1-5 this season after losing in Week 6 to the Las Vegas Raiders. As a result of losing yet another game this season, Belichick is closing in on what would be a rather unwanted record.

Belichick has now lost a total of 157 regular season games in the NFL, which is eight fewer than the current record of 165 losses. That record is currently held Jeff Fisher and Dan Reeves, but Belichick could join that club should he lose eight more games this season.

On the other side, Belichick is also just 29 wins short of the all-time record held in the NFL regular season. Miami Dolphins legend currently holds the record with 328 regular season wins, while Belichick has 299 victories.

After the Patriots lost to the Raiders on Sunday, Belichick was asked about the difficulties the team has endured so far this season. It’s the first time since Belichick took over as head coach in 2000 that he has a record of 1-5 after the first six games of the season.

“Couldn’t quite make enough plays here tonight," Belichick told on Sunday.. "Had our opportunities and just need to do a better job here and really just about every area.

“Any one of the number of things could have made a difference. We just need to coach it better, play it better, execute it a little bit better. That’s really the story again.”
