It's always a nice feeling when your partner goes out of their way to get you a thoughtful gift for a special occasion, be it a birthday, anniversary, or Christmas. These gifts don't have to be pricey, just as long as there was some thought put into them that proves your loved one listens to you and understands what you like.

But one woman has said she's going to dump her boyfriend over the gift he bought her for her birthday - even though it was very expensive. The woman found out her boyfriend is planning on taking her on a cruise, and while her family and friends think the gesture is "romantic", she couldn't be more horrified - as she suffers from "really bad sea sickness".

The woman said she was also already planning to go to a Renaissance fair festival the same week as the cruise, and her boyfriend was well aware of her plans before he booked the tickets. So, despite the gift seeming thoughtful, it's actually a present for him that doesn't consider her feelings at all.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "The first thing is this gift isn't for me. I do not like cruises because I get really bad seasickness and nothing I do helps. I also told him what I wanted to do for my birthday which was go to a Renfaire festival on my birthday. I have already taken the week off from work for it in preparation to go this fair. I have purchased tickets and am saving month to month so that I can have spending money without it affecting finances at home. Why would he book tickets the same time as the time I took off to go to this festival? Also, this cruise wasn't cheap at all so it's basically wasted money because I'm not going."

The woman added she is "so annoyed" by her boyfriend's plan, and it has "cemented" to her that he will never listen to her and only buys her gifts that he can enjoy too. She also said he often makes decisions based on what "he thinks is best", and she can no longer "deal with" his selfish ways.

She added: "I love him but I'm so done, and before anyone says I didn't talk to him or to talk to him about this, I have repeatedly. This has been a recurring conversation in our 2.5-year relationship. The next thing to do is talk this out and end things."

Commenters on the post were firmly on the woman's side, with many saying the man's behaviour is a "red flag", especially considering he booked the cruise knowing she already had plans. One person said: "I think the fact that he knows you have plans for the day of your birthday, and has deliberately double booked you after the fact, is a much bigger red flag than the obviously sh***y present."

While another wrote: "I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. I would be p***ed if a partner got me tickets to something that made me sick," and a third posted: "Gifting your partner an experience that you should know they will hate is a tragic move. You definitely have every right to want a partner who cares about you more than the idea of who they want you to be."
